I have just popped into the reserve this morning and the large pool is almost dry. In March it was overflowing and in just a short time how things have changed, take a look at the photos to see the difference.
Today – look how the water levels have dropped and the mud sides are exposed.
The young Moorhens were still out and about in the mud and water so they don’t seem to mind the extreme heat and lack of water.
It is still a beautiful place to sit and watch the world go by.
We had a good turn out last Saturday for the work party so the biscuits must be working.
It was a very humid morning but we managed to get a few good jobs done. The shed was tidied up and its amazing when you do something like this the space it generates but as usual we always have something to fill it up again.
The benches which had previously been cleaned were treated to protect them from the harsh weather (which I am sure we will get again).
Plants were put in place around the new Bird Hide so in time will hide the bottom of the hide but will also attract the wildlife.
The large pool is suffering from the heat now and has receded to an all time low but unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it.
Just to remind you there will be a work party this Saturday 21st July commencing at 10.00 am. Come prepared as the weather is still very hot and as a result of the heat our pools are suffering and we are seeing more and more of the shoreline.
As usual there will be tea and coffee at 11.00 am and usually some biscuits to go with it so come along and see what we get up to.
I almost forgot, we had a successful table top sale in Ashley Village hall the other Sunday. It was a very quiet day as the sun was shining, England were playing and the Grand Prix was on TV but all in all we did very well. The girls did well with their selling skills for the low turn out and the boys supported us with tea and coffee and eating all the biscuits!
It was a very hot day last Saturday but a few of us were available for the Work Party. The reserve looks totally different as the water in the large pool has receded quite a lot and we were able to get to areas that would normally be underwater.
The paths and seating area at the dipping pond were quite overgrown so we set about clearing and boy was it warm but we got the job done. There was also a small amount of maintenance to be had at the bird hide but that didn’t take long.
There were lots of insects about due to the heat and even taking photos was difficult as it was so bright but all in all a good working party.
We certainly enjoyed our cuppa at 11.00 am and the shade of the trees.
Just a reminder that there will be a work party tomorrow Saturday 7th July 2018 commencing 10.00 – 12.00 noon. There will be lots to do as some of the paths need clearing due to everything growing so quickly with this hot weather.
Enjoy a cuppa at 11.00 am and have a catch up and chat.
Don’t forget your sunscreen and maybe a hat as it will be warm.
